If you didn’t catch the record-breaking live chat conversation between on May 9, then you missed out. Watching long time friends & music icons, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu Verzuz “battle” on Instagram’s live platform felt like soul food. I lit my candle, burned some sage, and tuned in ( yes, I was an hour late), but I made it. For the past two hours, these two queens brought the internet to a halt and managed to give love, positivity, and light. Especially in a time when it is needed more than ever. Not only were they dignified, but they also showcased honest friendship and sisterhood that is rarely seen in the media between women of color that work in the same field.

We are always shown as competing with each other. This “Versuz” really wasn’t a battle against one another, and it was more so a battle against the stereotype that black women who are both talented can’t be in the same business without competition. Both Queen Erykah and Queen Jill showed that we can be skillful and be proud of our talent and still hold the next woman up for her talent and be proud of her. From sharing stories to playing their top hits such as “Tyrone” and “The Way,” 700+ thousand tuned in and experienced the sisterhood between these two queens. We seen celebrities such as Sza, Tiffany Haddish, and more swoon over their talents.

These ladies showed we could and should be standing up for and with our sisters. We can all shine, we can all get the bag, and all be a fierce, strong queen in the process. Another person’s light will never dim your own, but when we combine our light and shine together, we can brighten the darkest of days and nights. As a music lover and fan of both Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, I can say with all honesty, and this will be a show I will never forget.
